With a visionary goal to fortify resilience, preserve biodiversity, and foster sustainable coexistence with nature by 2030, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope for the Eastern Himalayan region.
The unveiling ceremony, graced by the esteemed presence of Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, underscored the imperative of collective action in the face of mounting ecological challenges. Emphasizing that the protection of Himalayan biodiversity transcends national boundaries, Prime Minister Tobgay articulated the necessity for collaborative efforts among neighboring nations.
Conceived as a collaborative endeavor between Bhutan, India, and Nepal, the GHTCL Initiative epitomizes solidarity in the pursuit of conservation. Shri Ravi Singh, CEO of WWF-India, lauded this unified approach, affirming the alliance’s resolve to champion the ecological and cultural heritage of the Himalayan realm.
The Eastern Himalayas, a sanctuary of unparalleled biodiversity, harbor a staggering array of flora and fauna. With over 10,000 plant species and a myriad of iconic wildlife including Royal Bengal Tigers, One-horned Rhinoceroses, Snow Leopards, and Asian Elephants, the region stands as a global biodiversity hotspot. However, the looming specter of anthropogenic threats threatens to unravel this natural tapestry.
Dr. Ghana S Gurung, representing WWF-Nepal, elucidated the dual challenge of conservation amidst burgeoning development and climate change. Against the backdrop of warming temperatures and burgeoning populations, preserving the ecological integrity of the Himalayas assumes paramount significance.
