Ambitious Framework to Boost Rural Economy and Agriculture

In a strategic move to invigorate its rural economy, Bhutan’s One Gewog-One Product (OGOP) project has launched an expansive new framework titled Upscaling OGOP Project for Engagement and Investments. The initiative aims to deepen collaboration among farmers, private enterprises, and business investors, setting the stage for a significant transformation in the nation’s agricultural sector.

Launched as a royal initiative in 2015, the OGOP project was designed to empower rural communities by supporting the production of authentic Bhutanese goods. Since its inception, the project has successfully developed over 65 unique products that showcase the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of Bhutan. Despite these successes, the project’s current scale remains modest compared to global agricultural practices, limiting its capacity to collect and market produce from local farmers effectively.

Officials from the Queen’s Project Office emphasized that the new framework is poised to expand the OGOP project’s operational capabilities. “Our goal is to enhance every stage of the agricultural value chain—from collection and processing to packaging and national-level marketing,” a spokesperson noted. This comprehensive approach is expected to not only increase production volumes but also significantly boost the rural economy by providing tangible benefits to farmers, start-ups, and entrepreneurs.

The revamped strategy focuses on several key areas:

  • Investment Models and Management Structures: The project will work on innovative investment models and strengthen its management frameworks to ensure more efficient operations.
  • Value Addition and Marketing: By improving the processes of value addition and marketing, the initiative aims to elevate the market competitiveness of Bhutanese agricultural products.
  • Training and Innovative Design: Enhanced training support for farmers, coupled with innovative design strategies, will help modernize traditional practices and encourage inclusive growth.
  • Engaging Foreign Investors: To foster a green and sustainable grassroots economy, the project is also exploring opportunities to attract foreign investment, broadening its resource base and market reach.

A dedicated project management unit has been established to oversee the smooth implementation of these initiatives. This unit will also serve as the point of contact for entrepreneurs seeking funding assistance, with support tailored to the scale and scope of their projects.
