Bhutan to Host Innovation Forum Amid Plans for World’s First Mindfulness City

Bhutan is set to become a global hub for mindful innovation as it prepares to host the highly anticipated Bhutan Innovation Forum (BIF) from October 1 to 3 at the historic Dungkar Dzong in Pangbisa, Paro. The three-day event will gather leading thinkers and innovators from around the world to delve into the synergy between mindfulness, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology.

At the heart of this gathering is Bhutan’s ambitious vision to develop Gelephu into the world’s first Mindfulness City (GMC), a project envisioned by His Majesty the King. Announced on December 17, 2023, the GMC aims to seamlessly integrate civil infrastructure with green technologies and mindful practices, fostering a community centered on harmony, well-being, and happiness.

Spanning over 2,500 square kilometers in the Sarpang district, Gelephu is strategically located at the crossroads of South Asia, ASEAN, and China. This prime positioning, coupled with Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development and its rich cultural heritage, positions GMC to become a leader in mindful and sustainable urban living on the global stage.

The Gelephu Mindfulness City project is designed not only to transform Bhutan’s economic landscape but also to enhance its participation in international markets, creating numerous opportunities for Bhutanese citizens. According to the official GMC website, the city will merge economic growth with principles of holistic living and sustainability, attracting businesses and professionals who prioritize environmental stewardship and spiritual well-being alongside commercial success.

BIF will serve as a crucial platform to brainstorm and outline strategies to realize this groundbreaking vision. Over 70 esteemed speakers are expected to present their insights, covering a wide array of topics such as integrating mindfulness into education and leadership, leveraging blockchain technology for knowledge economies, utilizing artificial intelligence in digital governance, promoting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investments for climate resilience, and developing carbon markets to drive sustainable growth.

The forum’s agenda is meticulously structured to foster comprehensive discussions, beginning with mindfulness and innovation on the first day, transitioning to innovation and entrepreneurship on the second, and culminating with a focus on entrepreneurship and sustainability on the final day. These sessions will explore the intricate connections between art, technology, and mindful business practices, emphasizing investments that support long-term sustainability.

The BIF has already attracted significant interest, with over 750 Bhutanese registrations and a strong turnout of international participants anticipated. However, due to venue capacity constraints, the event will accommodate approximately 450 Bhutanese and 500 international attendees, ensuring an intimate and impactful exchange of ideas.

His Majesty the King’s vision for the GMC represents a transformative step for Bhutan, aiming to balance economic prosperity with environmental preservation and spiritual fulfillment. As the Bhutan Innovation Forum approaches, the nation stands on the cusp of a new era, poised to showcase its unique approach to sustainable and mindful urban development to the world.
