This week, more than 21 women journalists from diverse media houses and freelancing backgrounds converged in Paro for a transformative three-day training workshop designed to bolster their journalism skills and enhance their professional capabilities. The workshop, titled “EmpowerHER: Amplifying the Voice of Women Journalists,” focused on equipping participants with essential tools and knowledge across various facets of modern journalism.
The event was organized by the Journalists’ Association of Bhutan (JAB) with financial backing from the Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan. Esteemed facilitators Kesang Dema, a former journalist, and Needrup Zangpo, ex-editor of Bhutan Observer, led the sessions, imparting valuable insights and techniques to the attendees.
Central to the workshop was the development of multimedia storytelling skills. Participants engaged in creating compelling narratives by integrating audio, video, text, and visuals, learning how to effectively use these elements across different media platforms. This training is expected to empower women journalists to produce rich, engaging content that resonates with diverse audiences.
In addition, the workshop delved into the use of digital media tools for research, data analysis, fact-checking, and content creation. These technical skills are increasingly vital in today’s digital age, enabling journalists to enhance their investigative capabilities and ensure the accuracy of their reporting.
Investigative reporting was another key focus of the workshop. Attendees explored advanced techniques for uncovering stories, conducting thorough interviews, and verifying information ethically. The emphasis on media ethics and the code of conduct aimed to instill a strong foundation in principles of accuracy, fairness, and accountability.
The overarching goal of EmpowerHER was to foster gender equality and inclusivity within the journalism field. By enhancing the skills and confidence of women journalists, the workshop sought to amplify their voices and support their professional development. As the organizers noted, the initiative aims to build a vibrant community of women journalists capable of driving positive change and shaping public discourse with fresh, diverse perspectives.
Reflecting on the impact of the workshop, one participant raised a poignant question: “While there is significant media coverage on gender disparity and women’s empowerment across various fields, who considers the challenges faced by women journalists in male-dominated newsrooms? Who reports on their struggles?”
EmpowerHER has successfully addressed this gap, providing a platform for women journalists to gain the skills, confidence, and support needed to navigate and influence the media landscape effectively.
