In the serene landscape of Bhutan, amidst its rich cultural tapestry and challenging climatic conditions, a youth-led initiative is making waves by addressing a critical need—clothing assistance for the less privileged while combating the staggering waste generated by the fashion industry. Founded on May 22, 2022, by four dedicated young individuals, Gola Gola Bhutan has swiftly grown into a beacon of hope and sustainability.
Phuntsho Wangchuk Rinzin, the co-founder and President of Gola Gola Bhutan, shared insights into the initiative’s origins and its ambitious goals during an exclusive interview with Bhutan Today.
Origins and Mission
“Gola Gola Bhutan was born out of a dual commitment: to honor our beloved King and to extend a helping hand to those in need,” Phuntsho Wangchuk Rinzin explained. The organization’s name, ‘Gola,’ meaning ‘Cloth,’ reflects its primary focus on providing quality clothing to underserved communities across Bhutan. Beyond mere charity, the initiative also aims to tackle the environmental crisis exacerbated by the clothing industry’s excessive waste production.
Cultural and Climatic Alignment
The initiative’s approach is not just culturally sensitive but adaptive to Bhutan’s diverse climatic conditions. “We ensure that donated clothes are not only suitable but respectful of our cultural norms,” Phuntsho Wangchuk Rinzin emphasized. In regions like Phuentsholing, where temperatures can soar, they prioritize lightweight, breathable fabrics that offer comfort without compromising cultural appropriateness.
Challenges and Growth
Despite its rapid expansion and impact, Gola Gola Bhutan faces challenges typical of any grassroots organization. “Our recent venture in Nubji Gewog was successful, but sourcing enough clothes and funding travel expenses remain significant hurdles,” Phuntsho Wangchuk Rinzin revealed. Nonetheless, the team remains undeterred in their mission to expand their reach and effectiveness.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Gola Gola Bhutan is gearing up for innovative initiatives to streamline donations and educate the youth. “We plan to install drop site boxes in high-traffic areas for convenient donations,” Phuntsho Wangchuk Rinzin shared. Additionally, they aim to establish clubs in colleges nationwide to engage youth in sustainable practices and empower them to make a meaningful impact.
How You Can Help
For those inspired to contribute, donating to Gola Gola Bhutan is straightforward. “You can find us on major social media platforms or contact us directly via phone,” Phuntsho Wangchuk Rinzin encouraged. Every contribution, whether in clothing or support, fuels their mission to clothe and care for those in need.
Gola Gola Bhutan stands as a testament to the power of youth-driven initiatives in fostering community support and environmental stewardship. As they continue to grow, their impact promises to resonate far beyond the borders of Bhutan, inspiring others to take action in their own communities.
