In a spirited celebration of leadership and transformation, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay unveiled his latest book, Enlightened Leadership: Inside Bhutan’s Inspiring Transition from Monarchy to Democracy, at simultaneous events in Singapore and Malaysia yesterday.
Drawing on Bhutan’s dramatic evolution from an absolute monarchy to a thriving democratic nation, the book offers readers a rare glimpse into the visionary leadership that has steered the small Himalayan kingdom through transformative times. According to the Prime Minister, the work is not merely a historical account but a reflection on governance, shared values, and the courage required to adapt in an ever-changing world.
“It is a story about leadership that prioritises the well-being of our people, the importance of shared values, and the courage to adapt in the face of change,” Tobgay wrote on social media, adding that the insights found within are meant to resonate with audiences worldwide, especially those wrestling with questions of national identity and governance.
The manuscript, penned during the reflective isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic, delves into the wisdom of Bhutan’s past and present leaders, including tributes to His Majesty the Fourth King and His Majesty the King. Their leadership, characterized by selflessness and forward-thinking policies, is credited with laying the groundwork for Bhutan’s commitment to the unique concept of Gross National Happiness—a principle that has become synonymous with the country’s identity.
Published by Penguin Random House Southeast Asia, the book is set to be accessible to a global audience through an e-book version available on Amazon. For readers preferring a physical copy, both Amazon and Kinokuniya will offer the title, with a special launch planned for Bhutan next month. The Prime Minister confirmed that Bhutanese readers can expect the digital version by the end of March and the hard copy in April.
In an added gesture of national service, proceeds from Enlightened Leadership are earmarked for charitable causes within Bhutan, reinforcing the Prime Minister’s commitment to social well-being.
