New Travel Guidebook About Culture and Mindfulness to Captivate Global Explorers

In a move poised to bolster the country’s burgeoning tourism industry, former Director General of the Department of Tourism, Dorji Dhratyul, launched his new book Bhutan: Kingdom of Mindfulness yesterday. The 400-page guide is being hailed as a fresh perspective on Bhutan’s rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty.

The book opens with the timeless romance of Singgay Galeem, a narrative that draws readers into the enchanting allure of the kingdom. From the first chapter, the reader is invited on a journey that melds folklore with modern-day travel insights, setting the stage for an in-depth exploration of Bhutan.

Beyond the romantic prologue, Bhutan: Kingdom of Mindfulness provides a comprehensive look at the nation’s history, its must-visit destinations, and the cultural festivals that illuminate its calendar. Detailed accounts of art, local customs, and historical landmarks offer an invaluable resource for both prospective visitors and Bhutanese citizens looking to reconnect with their heritage.

Dorji Dhratyul, who retired from his position in March 2024 after nearly four and a half years with the tourism department, explained his motivation for writing the guide. “Even in retirement, I wanted to continue contributing to the tourism sector. My first goal was to stay connected with tourism. I felt that this travel guidebook would help promote our country and reinforce the efforts of the Department of Tourism,” he said during the launch event.

What sets this guide apart is its dual appeal. Not only does it serve as a travelogue designed to assist first-time visitors with up-to-date information and practical advice, but it also acts as a cultural catalogue for young Bhutanese, offering new insights into their own traditions and history. The book’s meticulously curated photographs and succinct yet essential details have already earned praise from early readers.

Published by Alu Quchu, a local Bhutanese publishing service, the book includes a dedicated chapter featuring essential websites and emergency contacts, ensuring that both tourists and locals have access to vital information.

As Bhutan continues to position itself as a unique destination for mindful travel, Bhutan: Kingdom of Mindfulness is expected to be a key asset in shaping the future of the nation’s tourism and cultural education. With a refreshing approach that marries historical context with modern travel needs, the guidebook is set to become a staple for anyone looking to experience the serene charm of Bhutan.
