Thimphu Technical Training Institute expands with new facility at Serbithang

The Technical Training Institute in Thimphu can now enrol more trainees. The institute has expanded its enrolment capacity with the establishment of a new building at Serbithang which the Education Minister inaugurated yesterday. The new building has improved facilities including adequate classrooms, staff rooms, training infrastructure, and boarding facilities unlike the previous one at Changzamtog. The construction was funded by the government and the Asian Development Bank.

At its previous location in Changzamtog, the Technical Training Institute (TTI) shared its space with another agency, resulting in limited classrooms for its 105 trainees.

The new facility at Serbithang can accommodate over 300 students.

According to the institute’s principal, the new facility will increase enrolment capacity and improve the overall learning environment.

“We did not have boarding facilities due to which we had difficulty in getting enough trainees. The students would drop out mid-way saying that they didn’t have anyone to stay with, in Thimphu. With the completion of this new campus, we have enough adequate classrooms here, and we have enough offices, and also we have boarding facilities, which can accommodate about 300 students. We are planning to recruit trainees on a day scholar basis also because we have city bus services out here till our main gate,” said Sonam Wangmo, Principal of TTI Thimphu.

Moreover, officials from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development said, the ministry will introduce diverse programmes to enhance youth employability.

Sangay Dorji, a Specialist working at the Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development under the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, “Our main objective is to enhance the enrolment capacity and also to improve the quality of the infrastructure and facilities to impart various types of skilling programmes. Going forward, we want to introduce diverse types of programmes not only at the national certificate level but also introduce diploma, applied bachelor’s, and applied master’s as well.”

Currently, there are 10 Technical Training Institutes in the country.

The construction of the new structure at Serbithang started in 2020 and was completed last month.
