The magnificent Chorten Kora stands adjacent to the gushing rivers of Kulong Chhu, casting whitish illumination upon the surrounding hollow and diffusing the entire region with serene tranquility, evoking a sacredness that transcends boundaries. In the annals of history, Chorten Kora finds its origin in the year 1740, meticulously established by the revered spiritual master Lama Ngawang Loday. The primary purpose behind its creation was to memorialize his late uncle, Jungshu Phesan, and to serve as a protective bastion against the malevolent forces that lurked. The iconic stupa bears a striking resemblance to the renowned Bodhnath stupa of Nepal, with historical claims suggesting that Lama Ngawang Loday drew inspiration from the remarkable architectural design of the Boudhanath stupa.
Annually, the revered events of Dakpa Kora and Drukpa Kora take place on the 15th and 30th days of the Lunar Calendar, respectively. Dakpa Kora attracts in devoted pilgrims from Arunachal Pradesh (Dakpa tribes), who gather to commemorate the selfless sacrifices of an 8-year-old girl from their region, made for the greater well-being of all sentient beings. Correspondingly, Drukpa Kora holds deep significance for the Bhutanese populace, enticing devout participants from as far as Merak and Sakteng. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche subdued an evil spirit named Myongkhapa at this very site during the 8th century. Over time, various spiritual personalities have been drawn to this sacred location, and during the 15th century, Yongzin Nagayi Wangchuck played a pivotal role in establishing and expanding the existing shrine.
Annually, on the 23rd and 25th of March, devotees from all walks of life converge at Gomphu Kora, infusing the event with collective prayers and profound devotions. This vibrant congregation of individuals electrifies the atmosphere, creating an ambiance of spiritual fervor and shared reverence.
Trashiyangtshi, in addition to its sacred sites, holds the distinction of being designated as one of the Ramsar sites—a location of international importance for wetland conservation. Within this region lies the Bumdeling community, which receives a remarkable visitor every winter—the black-necked crane. The relationship between these elegant birds and the local inhabitants runs deep, carrying profound symbolism tied to their spiritual beliefs.
The arrival of the black-necked crane is met with great joy by the residents of Bumdeling, for it is revered as a symbol of longevity and happiness. To honor this momentous occasion, the locals partake in the annual black-necked crane festivals, during which they engage in traditional songs and dances that express their exuberance for the birds’ return. This vividly indicates the local’s appreciation for the harmonious co-existence of natural entities and humans.
