Tabab Chorten Nears Completion: A New Symbol of Peace and Heritage in Gelephu

Rising majestically against the backdrop of the southern foothills, the Tabab Chorten, one of the first spiritual landmarks of the Gelephu Mindfulness City, is nearing completion. Standing 53 feet tall—roughly the height of a four-storeyed building—the grand structure is about 90 percent complete and is expected to soon open its gates to devotees and visitors.

Located at Namkhailing, just a short distance above the Gelephu border gate, the chorten is envisioned as a symbol of peace and Bhutanese heritage, welcoming all who enter the Mindfulness City. Most of the exterior work has been completed, and attention is now focused on the intricate interior, where artisans are meticulously crafting sacred statues.

“This chorten is the first step in establishing Gelephu as a global hub for Vajrayana Buddhism,” said Lam Neten Sangay Tshering of Sarpang Rabdey. “The entrance itself must remind people that they are entering a sacred space, one that commands respect and reverence.”

Sacred Artistry at the Heart of the Chorten

At the center of the chorten will be an imposing 18-foot statue of Ugyen Norlha, the revered wealth deity, accompanied by Tshering Che Nga, Norlha Den Nga, and other deities. Thousands of smaller Tongkus—representing 25 different gods—are also being prepared for installation.

“These Tongkus have been painstakingly crafted over the past eight months by a family and volunteers in Thimphu,” shared Chogyal, the Project Manager. “The chorten will house them as sacred offerings for prosperity and peace.”

Community Spirit and Volunteerism

While the project carries a hefty price tag of Nu 300 million, much of its heart lies in the spirit of volunteerism. Residents of Gelephu have been actively participating, helping to install the Tongkus and assist the monks in various tasks.

“We may not be able to contribute financially, but we give our time,” said Sangay Choden, a local volunteer. Leki Wangmo, another volunteer, added, “This is our way of honoring His Majesty the King’s vision for Gelephu. Being part of this transformation fills us with pride.”

A Glimpse of the Future

Only landscaping and lighting installations remain before the chorten’s completion. External specialists are expected to finalize these aspects in the coming weeks. Once completed, Tabab Chorten will not only serve as a spiritual landmark but also as a reminder of Bhutan’s deep-rooted traditions.

Its name, Tabab, reflects an ancient custom—travellers traditionally dismounted before approaching sacred sites, a gesture of respect that the chorten now symbolically invites all visitors to emulate.

With the Tabab Chorten nearly ready, it marks the beginning of a series of spiritual projects planned for the Gelephu Mindfulness City, signaling a new era where Bhutan’s spiritual heritage meets its modern aspirations.
