Youth in Action: DHSS Students Lead by Serving

To the Editor,

I am writing to commend the admirable initiative undertaken by Dorokha Higher Secondary School (DHSS) students during their summer break under the theme “Connecting to Community, Service During Summer.” This program, initiated by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, is an inspiring example of youth engagement in civic responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Instead of spending their break solely on personal interests, students are dedicating over 20 hours to meaningful community service. Activities such as cleaning public spaces, maintaining pathways, preserving water sources, and planting trees not only enhance the local environment but also instill in students a sense of belonging and ownership over their community.

This initiative also provides invaluable life lessons—teaching leadership, teamwork, and empathy. As Principal Udai N Bhattarai rightly noted, such programs reconnect students with their roots and help shape them into responsible citizens who can contribute to nation-building. Moreover, the active involvement of parents, teachers, and local leaders strengthens community bonds and ensures the program’s success.

In an era where youth are often criticized for being disengaged, DHSS students are proving that young people can be catalysts for positive change. I urge other schools to adopt similar programs to nurture responsible and compassionate future leaders.
