Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen Calls for Collective Commitment to Youth Well-Being at PEMA Symposium

Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen graced the opening of the Third Annual PEMA Symposium in Thimphu, reaffirming the nation’s dedication to nurturing the mental health and well-being of Bhutan’s younger generations.

The symposium, held under the theme “Empowering Young Minds, Building Futures: Investing in Children and Adolescents’ Mental Health and Well-Being,” brought together educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals to discuss holistic approaches to supporting the country’s youth.

In her address, Her Majesty underscored that the well-being of children is the foundation of a compassionate, resilient, and forward-looking society. She spoke passionately about the collective responsibility of families, schools, and communities in ensuring that every child grows up in a safe and supportive environment.

Her Majesty also highlighted the continuing efforts of the PEMA Secretariat, an institution dedicated to promoting mental wellness and resilience across the country. As part of this commitment, the National Mental Health Strategy and the BRAVE programme were officially launched during the event—two landmark initiatives designed to strengthen Bhutan’s mental health services and empower young people with emotional and psychological tools for life.

Citing the enduring vision of Bhutan’s Kings, The Gyaltsuen emphasized that national progress must always be guided by well-being—a principle enshrined in the philosophy of Gross National Happiness. She reflected on how the royal vision continues to inspire youth empowerment programmes that place happiness and mental health at the heart of national development.

Expressing deep gratitude to all collaborators and partners, Her Majesty called upon society to act with unity and compassion in shaping a future where every child can thrive. “The Bhutan we aspire to build,” she said, “is one where every young person feels valued, supported, and hopeful about the future.”

The symposium concluded with renewed commitment among participants to continue investing in the mental well-being of Bhutan’s children and adolescents—ensuring that the nation’s future is as emotionally strong as it is bright.
