A quiet farming community in Chanachen is seeing a transformation in both its fields and household fortunes, thanks to a new organic agriculture initiative backed by a Japanese company.
For years, farmers in the area struggled with low crop yields and uncertain markets, making it difficult to earn a reliable income from agriculture. Many families farmed mainly for their own consumption, selling small surpluses when possible. That pattern is now beginning to change.
The organic farming project, which currently supports around 18 farmers, has introduced improved cultivation practices and stronger market linkages. By adopting organic techniques, farmers are producing healthier crops while also reducing their dependence on expensive chemical inputs. Access to a shared vegetable shed and connections with local dealers have further helped stabilize sales, ensuring that produce reaches buyers more consistently.
One of the most significant improvements has come from the installation of chain-link fencing around farmland. The fencing has reduced damage from wild animals, a long-standing problem that previously wiped out large portions of crops. With better protection, farmers are harvesting more vegetables than before, directly contributing to higher incomes.
Local farmers such as Dawa Gyeltshen, Ugyen, and Chungku say the changes have had a noticeable impact on their daily lives. Increased yields mean more produce to sell, and predictable markets have brought a sense of financial security that was previously out of reach.
Beyond higher earnings, the project is encouraging a broader shift in mindset—from subsistence farming toward commercial agriculture. As incomes rise and confidence grows, farmers are beginning to see agriculture not just as a means of survival, but as a viable and sustainable livelihood for the future.
The Chanachen initiative stands as an example of how targeted support, practical infrastructure, and market access can work together to strengthen rural communities and create lasting economic change.
