TEDxThimphu Ignites New Conversations and Ideas

Thimphu witnessed a revival of ideas and inspiration yesterday as TEDxThimphu returned after a ten-year hiatus, drawing a diverse group of speakers and participants eager to exchange perspectives on purpose, identity, and community.

The event featured eleven speakers representing eight countries, each delivering concise ten-minute talks that resonated with themes of self-discovery, resilience, and collective well-being. From reflections on personal growth to insights on building meaningful communities, the speakers captivated an audience of around 200 attendees.

For many, the event marked not just a return, but a reawakening of a platform that encourages dialogue and fresh thinking in Bhutan.

Kah Shin Leow, an endurance athlete from Singapore, described the opportunity as deeply meaningful. She noted that Bhutan holds a special place in her heart and highlighted the shared values between her home country and the Himalayan kingdom. Delivering her first TEDx talk in Thimphu, she said, was both an honour and a memorable milestone.

The broader significance of the event was also emphasised by Karma Dendup, a National Media Award-winning documentary producer. He pointed out that TEDx provides Bhutan with valuable global exposure, connecting the country to a wider network of thinkers and innovators and opening new avenues for collaboration and creativity.

Students in attendance found the experience particularly impactful. Tshering Choeden of Nobuling Rigter College described the event as inspiring and unexpectedly engaging, noting that the mix of humour and emotion in the talks added depth to the experience. As a literature student, she said the exposure to diverse storytelling styles would benefit her academic pursuits.

Similarly, Lhawang Alejandro Betancourt from Pelkhil School expressed gratitude for attending his first TEDx event, calling it a motivating experience that offered powerful insights from individuals willing to share their journeys.

Chencho Dorji Rinzin of Motithang Higher Secondary School reflected on key takeaways, including the importance of stepping beyond one’s comfort zone in pursuit of knowledge. He also highlighted a recurring theme from the talks—that while financial stability matters, one’s relationship with money is what ultimately shapes well-being.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic response, organisers are already preparing for the next edition. Organiser Dorji Dhradhul said plans are underway to host another TEDxThimphu event within the next four to six months. He added that the talks from this edition will be curated and submitted to TED headquarters, with the hope of being featured on the official TEDx YouTube platform.

As voices from different cultures and backgrounds converged in the capital, the event succeeded in doing more than just returning after a long gap. It rekindled a spirit of inquiry and connection, laying the groundwork for a growing community of thinkers and changemakers poised to contribute to Bhutan’s evolving narrative.
