In the quiet halls of VAST Bhutan in Thimphu, a striking new exhibition is prompting visitors to pause and reflect on the nature of life, choice, and the unseen forces that shape human existence.
Titled Boundless Strokes, the month-long solo exhibition presents a contemporary interpretation of traditional Dzongkha calligraphy, blending artistic discipline with philosophical depth. Showcased as part of the Lungta Art Festival 2026, the exhibition stands out as the festival’s second solo showcase, drawing attention for both its visual minimalism and conceptual richness.
At the heart of the exhibition is Druk-Yig calligraphy, specifically the forms of Tshugyig and Jogyig. However, rather than focusing solely on linguistic expression, the works transcend written language, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where art becomes a meditation on existence itself.
Each piece is created using a dry-brush technique, a method that allows no room for correction. Every stroke is intentional, permanent, and unalterable. This disciplined approach mirrors the artist’s view of life—where decisions, once made, cannot be undone.
Calligrapher Karma Jurmi, the creative force behind the exhibition, explains that the process is deeply personal. He sees each stroke as a reflection of life’s singular journey, where there are no second chances or opportunities to revisit the past. According to him, people often take life for granted, forgetting its fleeting nature and the finality of every choice.
The exhibition’s stark black-and-white palette reinforces this idea of clarity and decisiveness. In a world often perceived as complex and ambiguous, the artist reduces existence to its simplest form—choices that are either “yes” or “no,” with little room for in-between.
Yet, the works are not entirely devoid of nuance. Fleeting touches of gold appear across the canvases, subtle but deliberate.
