Thousands Gather as Sacred Month-Long Programme Concludes at Kuenselphodrang

A profound wave of spiritual devotion culminated at Kuenselphodrang yesterday as the month-long Kathrid Empowerment and Kyilchog Dorji Threngwa drew to a successful close. To mark the completion of the major religious event, His Holiness the Je Khenpo presided over a sacred Tshokhor ceremony today.

For the past month, the hills of Kuenselphodrang were transformed into a vibrant epicenter of faith, drawing a staggering daily congregation of over 30,000 devotees. Pilgrims from across the country gathered each morning to receive sacred teachings directly from His Holiness. Throughout the month, His Holiness the Je Khenpo focused his sermons on core Buddhist principles, urging the gathering to deeply reflect on the impermanent nature of existence, the laws of karma, and the dedicated practice of Dharma.

For the thousands in attendance—many of whom traveled from remote, rural corners of Bhutan—the event was a deeply transformative experience. Beyond the spiritual blessings, the gathering allowed devotees to form Dorji Puen (spiritual brotherhood/sisterhood), fostering a profound sense of community.

Voices of Faith

The atmosphere at the closing ceremony was charged with both joy and reflection. Devotees expressed immense gratitude, alongside a heightened awareness of life’s fleeting nature.

“The same empowerment will also be bestowed in Punakha,” shared Nidup Pema, a devotee who traveled from Wangdue Phodrang. “However, life is impermanent, so I feel both happy and emotional to have had the opportunity to participate here. Although the empowerment concludes today, I hope to receive the same empowerment again in Punakha.”

For others, the conclusion marks the beginning of a strict personal spiritual commitment. Pema Wangchuk, a devotee from Monggar, shared the vows he took under the guidance of the spiritual head. “I feel truly blessed to have received the teachings and blessings from His Holiness the Je Khenpo. His Holiness instructed us to recite 100,000 mantras and perform 100,000 prostrations. I am committed to fulfilling these practices.”

Expressing a sentiment shared by the masses, Dorji Gyeltshen of Thimphu added, “With great devotion, we pray for the long life of His Holiness the Je Khenpo. For many of us from rural parts of the country, this has been a valuable opportunity.”

Preserving a Centuries-Old Tradition

Speaking on the historical significance of the event, Thoepa Jamtsho, the Vice President of Tango Buddhist University, noted that successive Je Khenpos have been conferring these exact empowerments for centuries. He emphasized the vital importance of Bhutanese citizens continuing to receive these teachings to ensure the preservation of the nation’s sacred heritage.

For those who missed the Thimphu teachings, the sacred programme is set to tour other regions. According to university officials, the spiritual journey will continue in Paro, where His Holiness will deliver teachings.

Following the stop in Paro, the full religious programme will move to Punakha. “We have been informed that in Paro, only the teachings will be given, without the Kyilchog Dorji Threngwa empowerment,” Jamtsho clarified. “However, in Punakha, both the Kathrid Empowerment and the Kyilchog Dorji Threngwa will be conferred in the same way as they were here at Kuenselphodrang.”
