Bhutan Launches Commercial Sports Venture to Drive Sustainable Growth

In a landmark move aimed at transforming the country’s sporting landscape, Bhutan has launched Bhutan Sports Ventures (BSV), a dedicated commercial entity designed to create long-term financial sustainability for sports development. The initiative was officially unveiled in Thimphu in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), under the theme “Beyond the Peak – New Heights. New Ecosystem.”

Established as a wholly owned public limited company under the Bhutan Olympic Committee, BSV has been created to unlock new commercial opportunities while reducing the sector’s dependence on government funding and external assistance. The company will focus on attracting private sector investment through strategic partnerships, sponsorships, media rights, merchandising, major sporting events, and other revenue-generating initiatives.

Speaking at the launch, BOC Secretary General Sonam Karma Tshering said Bhutan’s sports ecosystem must evolve alongside the country’s broader economic transformation. He emphasised that the new venture seeks to position businesses as long-term stakeholders in the development of sports rather than limiting their role to event sponsorships.

BSV Board Member and Interim Chief Executive Officer Sonam Tobgay said the company was established under the leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck to complement the Bhutan Olympic Committee’s non-profit mandate.

He explained that BSV has two primary objectives: serving as the commercial arm of the Bhutan Olympic Committee and creating greater opportunities for private sector participation in building Bhutan’s sporting ecosystem. He also clarified that the company is not intended to dominate the sports industry but to encourage collaboration and investment from businesses across the country.

According to Tobgay, all revenue generated through BSV’s commercial activities will be channelled back to the Bhutan Olympic Committee to support athlete welfare, coaching programmes, and the overall development of sports in Bhutan.

The initiative aligns with several of Bhutan’s national development priorities, including the 10X Economic Vision, the National Sports Strategy, and the Gelephu Mindfulness City project, reflecting the government’s broader effort to integrate sports into the country’s economic and social development agenda.

The launch also introduced BSV’s first flagship project—the CAVA Beach Tour Bhutan 2026. Organised in partnership with the Bhutan Volleyball Federation, the international tournament will coincide with the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers, which Bhutan is scheduled to host from 31 August to 6 September 2026.

While the AFC qualifiers are expected to bring youth football teams from across Asia to Bhutan, the CAVA Beach Tour is anticipated to strengthen the country’s reputation as a destination for international sporting events and sports tourism.

Officials believe the establishment of Bhutan Sports Ventures marks a significant milestone in the country’s sporting journey, creating a platform where government institutions, sports federations, businesses, and local communities can work together to build a vibrant and self-sustaining sports economy that benefits athletes and future generations alike.
