Bhutan marked International Youth Day 2026 with a celebration of something both timeless and increasingly important—the exchange of wisdom between generations.
Bringing young people and elders into the same conversation, “Bridges of Wisdom: Elder Stories to Inspire Young Voices” created a space where experiences of the past met the aspirations of the future. The gathering brought together youth, senior citizens, government representatives, civil society organisations, development partners and representatives of the United Nations to explore how Bhutan’s enduring values can continue to provide direction in a rapidly changing world.
Rather than treating young people simply as recipients of advice, the event encouraged a two-way conversation. Elders shared experiences and lessons accumulated over their lifetimes, while young Bhutanese spoke about their hopes, concerns and the realities of growing up at a time of profound social and economic change.
Through storytelling and candid discussions, participants reflected on issues ranging from identity, inclusion and wellbeing to leadership, food heritage and the aspirations of Bhutan’s younger generation. At the heart of these conversations was a larger question: how can Bhutan embrace change without losing the values and knowledge that have long held its communities together?
The occasion also saw the launch of the UNFPA Demographic Future Survey 2026 Global Report, adding a broader demographic perspective to the day’s discussions. The report provided a backdrop for examining the choices, expectations and circumstances shaping the lives of young people and the future they hope to build.
Her Royal Highness Ashi Kesang Chodren Wangchuck captured the spirit of the gathering by emphasising the importance of carrying wisdom forward while remaining open to new possibilities.
“May we continue to build bridges of wisdom, between generations, between ideas, and between the Bhutan we have inherited and the Bhutan we aspire to create,” Her Royal Highness said. “May the lessons we receive today become the legacy we pass on tomorrow.”
The message resonated strongly with the purpose of International Youth Day. As Bhutan undergoes demographic, economic and social transformation, conversations about the country’s future increasingly require the voices of those who will inherit it. At the same time, the knowledge held by older generations offers valuable perspective on the traditions, resilience and sense of community that have shaped Bhutan.
The day’s exchanges demonstrated that preserving heritage and embracing change need not be competing ambitions. When young people have the opportunity to question, imagine and contribute, and elders have the space to share what experience has taught them, both generations become participants in shaping the country’s evolving story.
The gathering ultimately offered a simple but significant reminder: a bridge between generations is built not merely by speaking, but by listening. In that exchange, Bhutan can preserve what remains valuable from its past while giving its young people the confidence and space to create a future that is more inclusive, resilient and happy.
As the conversations drew to a close, the idea behind Bridges of Wisdom extended well beyond a single International Youth Day celebration. The wisdom inherited today, and the voices encouraged today, will together help determine the Bhutan passed on tomorrow.
