108 Stupas Erected in Nine Hours at Gelephu Mindfulness City, Celebrating Bhutan’s Spirit of Unity

In a remarkable demonstration of faith, unity and collective determination, 108 stupas were erected within just nine hours at Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), marking an occasion of profound spiritual and national significance.

The extraordinary achievement coincided with two important observances in Bhutan’s calendar: the Descending Day of Lord Buddha and Coronation Day. The convergence of these occasions lent deeper meaning to the initiative, bringing together spiritual devotion, national pride and a shared commitment to Bhutan’s future.

Beyond the impressive scale and speed of construction, the undertaking reflected the enduring values that define Bhutanese society. People from different generations and walks of life came together voluntarily, united by a common purpose and a spirit of service.

In Buddhist tradition, stupas are sacred monuments symbolising enlightenment, wisdom and compassion. The creation of 108 such structures carries particular spiritual significance, as the number 108 holds a revered place in Buddhist practice and philosophy.

His Majesty The King, reflecting on the achievement, emphasised that its greatest significance lay not merely in the physical construction of the stupas but in the character and collective spirit of the Bhutanese people.

“To raise 108 Stupas in a matter of hours is a remarkable accomplishment. But the true fruit of those blessings, those prayers, and that labour is seen in us, the Bhutanese people. In our values and virtues, in our loyalty, and in the joy we take in service,” His Majesty said.

The King further highlighted the voluntary participation of citizens across generations, describing their willingness to contribute to the country’s future as the true measure of the day’s success.

The initiative also resonates with the larger vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City, an ambitious undertaking that seeks to harmonise Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural heritage with aspirations for sustainable development and economic progress.

As Bhutan looks towards a new chapter of growth and transformation, the construction of the 108 stupas stands as a powerful reminder that development is not measured by infrastructure alone. Equally important are the values, relationships and sense of shared responsibility that sustain a nation.

What was accomplished in nine hours will endure as more than a feat of construction. It represents a collective expression of faith, a celebration of Bhutanese identity and a testament to the power of people working together towards a common national purpose.

At Gelephu Mindfulness City, the 108 stupas now stand as symbols of a nation seeking to carry its spiritual inheritance into the future, guided by unity, compassion and service.
