Bhutan Creates Guinness World Record with Construction of 108 Stupas in Nine Hours

Bhutan has achieved a remarkable international milestone after successfully constructing and consecrating 108 Buddhist stupas within nine hours, earning recognition from Guinness World Records. The extraordinary undertaking, carried out in Gelephu, brought together hundreds of volunteers in a demonstration of collective dedication, spiritual devotion and community cooperation.

The initiative commenced at 3 am on November 1, with groups of approximately 20 to 23 volunteers working simultaneously at designated locations along the Mau River. Following construction, Buddhist monks conducted traditional consecration ceremonies at each site, completing an undertaking that combined religious observance with coordinated community participation.

The achievement was officially verified by Guinness World Records, whose adjudicators examined documentation, video recordings and evidence of the consecration rituals.

According to Guinness World Records adjudicator Swapnil, the record required at least 85 newly constructed stupas to be completed simultaneously and subsequently consecrated in accordance with established local traditions. Bhutan exceeded this requirement by completing 108 stupas within the stipulated period.

The adjudicator commended the organisers for developing an unprecedented initiative, particularly acknowledging the efficiency and quality demonstrated throughout the construction process.

Organised through the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority, the initiative also reflects the broader aspirations associated with Gelephu Mindfulness City, where spiritual values and community wellbeing are intended to remain central to development.

In Buddhist tradition, stupas serve as sacred monuments associated with enlightenment, compassion and spiritual practice. Their construction carries considerable religious and cultural significance, making the achievement particularly meaningful for Bhutan, a country deeply rooted in Buddhist heritage.

Beyond securing international recognition, the record highlights the power of collective participation in preserving cultural traditions. The accomplishment also demonstrates how Bhutan continues to bring its spiritual identity into contemporary initiatives, creating opportunities to showcase its heritage on the global stage.
