The sacred grounds of Kuensel Phodrang are fully prepared to welcome an estimated 30,000 devotees daily for the month-long Kathrid Empowerment and Kyilchog Dorji Threngwa, which commences this Monday. His Holiness the Je Khenpo will preside over the auspicious event, bestowing sacred empowerments requested on behalf of the nation by Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
Organizers have spent the past week transforming the venue to ensure a seamless spiritual experience for the massive gathering. According to the Central Monastic Body, the month-long teachings will focus on core Buddhist principles, including the laws of karma, the nature of impermanence, and the profound importance of practicing the Dharma.
To accommodate the unprecedented crowd, extensive infrastructural upgrades have been made to the site. Recognizing that devotees often crowd the front to catch a glimpse of His Holiness, organizers have installed 13 large LED screens throughout the venue.
“Devotees usually try to secure seats close to where they can see His Holiness, but this is not necessary,” explained Pema Gyeltshen, the Tshogki Drungchen of the Central Monastic Body. “To ensure clear visibility, we have installed LED screens so everyone can follow the proceedings clearly from wherever they are seated.”
Substantial measures have also been taken to improve public health and comfort. The venue’s sanitation facilities have been dramatically expanded, with over 100 new toilets constructed, bringing the total count to approximately 160. Organizers have strategically reserved the facilities closest to the main seating areas for elderly citizens to ensure easy and convenient access. Additionally, medical tents have been pitched on-site to treat minor illnesses, and dedicated ambulances will remain on standby for more serious emergencies. Temporary shops and stalls have also been permitted around the perimeter to cater to the daily needs of the public.
With thousands expected to converge on Kuensel Phodrang daily, authorities are heavily focusing on traffic management and urging the public to plan their travel carefully.
Strict transport regulations will be enforced for the duration of the event. Private vehicles will be completely barred from driving up to the venue, though they will be permitted to drop off devotees before 5:00 AM. After the early-morning cutoff, commuters must rely on designated taxi and public bus services to travel to and from the site.
As the historic spiritual convergence begins, organizers are calling on the public to cooperate with transport and security officials to ensure a peaceful and orderly environment for all.
