BBS Tunes Into the Future with AI and AR; Training Support from India

A group of 19 officials from the Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation Limited (BBSCL) has completed a two-week specialised training programme in India aimed at strengthening the national broadcaster’s capabilities in emerging digital technologies and social media innovation.

The customised programme on “Social Media Innovation with AI and AR” was held from 5–18 August 2026 at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Mohali, India. The training was organised by India’s Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with C-DAC as part of the ongoing capacity-building partnership between Bhutan and India.

Over the course of the programme, the BBSCL officials received exposure to emerging applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), and innovative social media practices, with an emphasis on how these technologies can be incorporated into contemporary media and communication.

The training comes at a time when broadcasting organisations around the world are adapting to rapidly changing patterns of news consumption and audience engagement. Digital platforms have increasingly become an important part of how broadcasters produce, distribute and present content, alongside traditional television and radio.

For BBSCL, developing expertise in AI and AR can open new possibilities in areas such as digital storytelling, content production, visual presentation and audience engagement across social media platforms. The programme also provided participants an opportunity to explore how emerging technologies can complement conventional broadcasting practices and strengthen the broadcaster’s presence in an increasingly digital media environment.

The participation of Bhutanese media professionals in the programme also reflects the broader Bhutan–India cooperation in human resource development and capacity building, under which Bhutanese officials and professionals have continued to receive specialised training in a range of fields.

The knowledge and skills acquired during the two-week programme are expected to contribute to BBSCL’s continuing efforts to modernise its digital capabilities and explore innovative ways of delivering relevant and engaging content to audiences in Bhutan.
