Bhutan has drawn renewed international attention to its agricultural sector after a major trade and investment forum showcased opportunities in aquaculture, wellness products, and premium food manufacturing.
The Bhutan Agrifood Trade and Investment Forum (BATIF) 2.0, held recently, brought together foreign investors, government agencies, and private enterprises to explore collaborations aimed at strengthening the country’s agrifood economy. The event highlighted Bhutan’s growing appeal as a destination for sustainable and high-value agricultural investment.
Among the key international participants was Japanese company Strout Inc., which announced plans to explore large-scale trout farming in Bhutan. Citing the country’s abundant freshwater resources and favorable climatic conditions, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bhutan Livestock Development Corporation Limited to advance cooperation in aquaculture development.
European interest was also evident at the forum. Italy-based Detox Guru expressed keen interest in sourcing Bhutanese medicinal and wellness products for overseas markets. Company representatives discussed partnerships focused on herbal and natural ingredients, reflecting increasing global demand for organic and health-oriented products.
Thailand’s Gallothai Co., Ltd also entered discussions on potential investments in Bhutan’s premium chocolate industry. The company noted that Bhutanese products could find strong demand across Asian markets, particularly in the growing niche for artisanal and high-quality chocolate.
In addition to foreign investment proposals, the forum featured a range of domestic initiatives designed to modernize and diversify Bhutan’s agricultural sector. Presentations included projects related to specialty coffee cultivation, dairy processing, and climate-smart farming practices intended to improve resilience and productivity.
Officials and business leaders described the event as an important platform for building international partnerships while promoting Bhutan’s unique agricultural strengths. The forum concluded with multiple business-to-business engagements and the signing of several agreements aimed at accelerating investment and innovation across the agrifood sector.
Industry observers say the growing international interest signals increasing confidence in Bhutan’s potential to position itself as a producer of premium, sustainable agricultural products for regional and global markets.
