Bhutan Opens First FIFA Arena Mini Pitch in Southeast Asia

Grassroots football in Bhutan received a major boost today as His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck inaugurated a state-of-the-art mini football pitch at Loselling Middle Secondary School in Thimphu.

The facility, built under FIFA’s global Arena initiative, is the first of its kind in the Southeast Asian region. Designed specifically for five-a-side futsal, the pitch introduces a modern playing surface enclosed by a rebound board system — low, solid walls that keep the ball in continuous motion by bouncing it back into play. The innovative design encourages faster gameplay, sharper ball control, and efficient use of limited space.

The project represents a collaborative investment between the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) and FIFA. The BFF contributed Nu 750,000, while FIFA provided USD 50,000 to bring the facility to life.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sanjeevan C. Balasingam, FIFA Regional Director for Asia & Oceania, described the development as part of FIFA President’s ambitious vision to build 1,000 mini pitches worldwide.

“Bhutan is the recipient of two FIFA Arena pitches today — one of which we are inaugurating here in Thimphu,” he said. “It will bring more opportunities to the football community in this beautiful country, where football is very popular.”

A second mini pitch was also handed over to Tenduk Central School in Samtse on the same day, extending the benefits beyond the capital.

For students accustomed to playing on uneven and muddy grounds scattered with stones, the new surface marks a dramatic improvement. Bhutan Football Federation president Ugen Tsechup highlighted the importance of safe, quality infrastructure.

“Right now, children are playing on muddy and uneven grounds and risk getting hurt,” he said. “With more pitches like this across Bhutan, we hope to encourage both boys and girls to participate regularly. Consistent play will improve their skills and strengthen our player base. Ultimately, this will help our national team perform better at regional and international levels.”

Loselling Middle Secondary School formally assumed responsibility for the pitch during today’s ceremony. Vice Principal Pema Dorji underscored the broader educational value of the facility.

“We believe in wholesome education, and physical development is essential,” he said. “With this FIFA Arena, we can train our athletes properly without depending on external facilities. It is also a space we can share with other schools.”

The BFF has outlined an ambitious roadmap to construct 100 such mini pitches across the country over the next five years. Officials say the expansion will significantly strengthen futsal development and provide structured training environments for young athletes nationwide.

With today’s inauguration, Bhutan takes a decisive step toward nurturing football talent at the grassroots level — creating safer spaces for play and building the foundation for the sport’s future success.
