Bhutan Steps onto the Global Fashion Stage with Inaugural Fashion Week

Bhutan is set to make its mark in the international fashion arena with the launch of its first-ever Bhutan Fashion Week (BFW), a six-day celebration of heritage, creativity, and style. Running from October 27 to November 1, the event will unfold across three dzongkhags—Bumthang, Paro, and Thimphu—each serving as a stage for the nation’s vibrant textiles and evolving fashion identity.

BFW brings together 21 homegrown designers, who will collaborate with an ensemble of models, photographers, and stylists from India. Organisers hope this cross-border creative exchange will enhance Bhutan’s global appeal while showcasing the country’s craftsmanship to a wider audience. The Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property (DOMCIIP), the event’s principal sponsor, has positioned BFW as a strategic step toward replicating the cultural export success seen in countries like South Korea.

Themed around “the past, present, and future,” the program will highlight the evolution of Bhutanese fashion. Bumthang will spotlight traditional weaving and heritage textiles, Paro will blend cultural motifs with modern tailoring, and Thimphu will look ahead with experimental, forward-thinking designs. This multi-layered approach aims not only to celebrate Bhutan’s rich cultural legacy but also to present a contemporary narrative to the world.

Organisers envision BFW as more than a one-off spectacle. Plans are in motion to establish a Bhutan Fashion Council to provide a permanent platform for designers. Additionally, a digital marketplace will be launched after the event, enabling direct connections between Bhutanese creators and global buyers.

By weaving together tradition, innovation, and international collaboration, Bhutan Fashion Week aspires to position the country firmly within the global fashion conversation—ensuring that its distinctive designs find their place on runways and wardrobes far beyond its borders.
