Bright Future for Youth as 17th Golden Youth Award Concludes with Prestigious Scholarship

Thimphu, Bhutan – In a stirring celebration of talent and perseverance, 15-year-old Tenzin Yoedchenma Dorjee of Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School emerged victorious at the 17th Golden Youth Award 2025, earning a coveted scholarship to pursue further studies abroad. The award, designed to nurture academic excellence, extra-curricular prowess, and innovative spirit, has quickly become a beacon of hope for Bhutan’s aspiring youth.

The closing ceremony, held yesterday in the heart of Thimphu, was graced by prominent members of the Royal Family. Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck delivered an inspiring speech, urging the young participants to honor their roots while embracing their role as the nation’s future. “In times of difficulty, perseverance and resilience are our greatest strengths,” she emphasized, adding that the youth must carry forward the legacy of the country with pride and commitment.

The event was further enlivened by the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Princess Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck, Princess Kesang Choden Wangchuck, and Prince Ugyen Jigme Wangchuck, whose attendance underscored the importance of empowering the nation’s next generation.

Tenzin, who has long dreamed of the opportunity presented by the Golden Youth Award, expressed her gratitude following her win. “Firstly, I would like to thank His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, for it is through his vision that youths like me have such opportunities. With this honour, I will shoulder my responsibilities and prove I am worthy of this award,” she declared, her words resonating with promise and determination.

Milan Sunwar of Sherubling Higher Secondary School in Trongsa was named the first runner-up. Reflecting on his experience at the week-long camp, he said, “I met many talented friends and learned a lot from them. The best part of the camp was the talent show. We were all encouraged to showcase our talents and express ourselves in our own ways.” This year, both Tenzin and Milan will benefit from scholarships enabling them to study at United World College Wales in the United Kingdom and United World College Canada, respectively.

In addition to the top honors, Kingyel Wangchuk Dorji from Bhutan Football Federation Academy in Thimphu and Euphelma Menza from Gelephu Middle Secondary School in Sarpang secured the second and third runner-up positions. Their achievements reflect the diverse array of skills celebrated at this prestigious event.

Since its inception in 2008, the Golden Youth Award camp has served as a vital platform, bringing together 80 students from across 20 districts. Participants are rigorously assessed on academic competencies, co-curricular engagement, innovation, talent, and communication skills, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie.

As Bhutan continues to invest in its youth, the Golden Youth Award stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to cultivating future leaders and changemakers. With the promise of new horizons, the young winners are poised to contribute significantly to the vibrant tapestry of Bhutan’s evolving story.
