In an extraordinary display of endurance and compassion, Buddhist nun Ani Pema Deki, known internationally as Emma Slade, has completed a 400-kilometre trek along the historic Trans-Bhutan Trail, raising more than Nu 9 million to support education for children with disabilities.
The journey, which stretched over 37 days, took her across some of the country’s most remote landscapes. Slade trekked through relentless rain, deep mud, and steep Himalayan terrain, often navigating paths that tested both physical stamina and mental resilience. Despite the challenges, she described the experience as “deeply humbling and profoundly meaningful.”
The funds generated through her trek will go directly to the Draktso Centre for Vocational Training in Kanglung, a key institution providing disability-inclusive education and life-skills training. The centre plays a pivotal role in equipping young people with disabilities with the tools they need for independent living and future employment.
Slade is the founder of Opening Your Heart to Bhutan, a charitable organisation dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children in Bhutan. Her latest fundraising initiative reinforces her long-standing commitment to ensuring that children with disabilities receive equal access to education and opportunities.
As she reached Trashigang, completing the final leg of her arduous journey, Slade was met with a warm and emotional welcome from residents, supporters, and local officials. In recognition of her dedication and service, she was presented with a medal of appreciation, marking a celebratory end to a mission rooted in compassion.
Reflecting on the experience, Slade expressed gratitude for the support she received along the trail and reaffirmed her goal of promoting disability-inclusive learning across Bhutan.
Her achievement stands as a powerful reminder of how individual determination—when paired with a heartfelt purpose—can create meaningful change for communities in need.
