Bumthang is poised to take center stage as it prepares to host the 118th National Day celebrations at the historic Wangduechhoeling Palace ground, marking a milestone moment for the dzongkhag and the nation. This will be the first time Bhutan’s National Day is celebrated at this revered site, lending the occasion added historical weight and national pride.
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations, including members of the Royal Family. To ensure broad public participation, free transportation arrangements have been put in place, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the event and the importance of enabling citizens from across the region to be part of the historic day.
Preparations are underway through close coordination among multiple agencies, led by the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Bumthang Dzongkhag administration. From logistics and security to cultural programming and public services, officials have been working to ensure that the celebrations are conducted smoothly and with due dignity.
The choice of Wangduechhoeling Palace as the venue holds deep symbolic meaning. Bumthang is the birthplace of Bhutan’s First Druk Gyalpo, Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck, and the palace itself is closely associated with the foundations of the Bhutanese monarchy. Hosting the National Day here is seen as a powerful tribute to the country’s history and the enduring legacy of the Wangchuck dynasty.
Dzongrab Passang Dorji underscored the significance of the occasion, noting that celebrating National Day at Wangduechhoeling Palace is not only historic for Bumthang, but also deeply meaningful for the nation as a whole. He said the event serves as a reminder of Bhutan’s journey as a sovereign nation and the roots from which modern Bhutan emerged.
The celebrations on December 17 will feature vibrant cultural performances and food stalls showcasing local flavors, with festivities continuing into the evening. For many residents, the occasion is a source of excitement and pride, with hopes high for the opportunity to witness the celebrations firsthand and possibly catch a glimpse of His Majesty The King.
As Bumthang readies itself to welcome the nation, the upcoming National Day celebrations promise not only pageantry and festivity, but also a moment of reflection—honoring Bhutan’s past while celebrating its unity and identity.
