Celebrating a New Chapter in Oral Tradition with Folktale Anthology

In a resplendent celebration of heritage and narrative artistry, the Bhutanese launch of The Whispering Mountains: Marvellous Folktales from the Himalayas was held on March 22, 2025, at India House in Thimphu. The event, organized jointly by the Nehru Wangchuck Cultural Center, India House, and Bhutan Echoes, heralded the arrival of an anthology that weaves the magical threads of Himalayan folklore into a vibrant tapestry of cultural pride.

Edited and compiled by acclaimed authors Namita Gokhale and Malashri Lal, the anthology presents a diverse collection of folktales, capturing the oral traditions that have long defined Bhutan’s literary landscape. The book is further enriched by the contributions of three prominent Bhutanese writers, including Her Majesty the Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, Kunzang Choden Roder, and Tshering Tashi, whose narratives offer a unique insight into the nation’s storied past.

The evening’s proceedings were marked by a series of inspiring addresses. In a heartfelt speech, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, who also graced the event with the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, emphasized the significance of safeguarding Bhutan’s storytelling legacy. “Our folktales serve as a bridge linking generations, ensuring that the wisdom and magic of our past continue to resonate in the present,” she remarked, underscoring the cultural imperative of preserving these narratives.

Diplomatic dignitaries also lent their voices to the celebration. Indian Ambassador Sudhakar Dalela and Norwegian Ambassador May-Elin Stener highlighted the universal power of folklore in nurturing collective memory and identity. Author Namita Gokhale shared personal reflections on the transformative role of storytelling, linking the mythical past with the modern world.

The launch was further enlivened by dynamic readings from the anthology, where selected folktales were brought to life through engaging recitations that captivated the audience. A spirited discussion followed, exploring the enduring relevance of oral traditions in today’s fast-paced society.

Adding a touch of excitement to the festivities, attendees participated in a lucky draw, with the chance to win a signed copy of The Whispering Mountains. The initiative not only deepened the connection between the audience and the anthology but also reinforced the cultural significance of the project.

As Bhutan continues to cherish its unique heritage, The Whispering Mountains: Marvellous Folktales from the Himalayas stands as a testament to the power of stories—a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
