Gelephu Mindfulness City Unveils Inaugural Development Project with Landmark Renovation

The transformation of Gelephu into a hub of mindfulness and innovation has officially begun with the launch of the Gelephu Mindfulness City’s (GMC) first development project. Marking a major milestone, renovation work commenced yesterday on a historic building formerly occupied by Bhutan Post, laying the foundation for the city’s envisioned future.

The project, overseen by the City Development Office of the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority (GMCA), is led by GMCA’s Chief Executive Officer with project execution managed by Thailand-based developer MQDC. Once complete, the newly revitalized building will serve as a multi-functional hub, combining tradition and technology to create an inviting and modern urban space.

Designed to blend Bhutanese architectural heritage with contemporary interiors and state-of-the-art mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, the building will house visitor galleries, shared office spaces, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and more.

“The launch of this first renovation signals the beginning of a new chapter for Gelephu,” said a spokesperson from the Office of the Governor. “This building will reflect the mindfulness values at the heart of the city’s vision while creating practical, vibrant spaces for businesses and the community.”

The ground floor is set to feature an interactive gallery showcasing the vision and future of Gelephu Mindfulness City, alongside a public restaurant, a souvenir shop, a reception area, and office meeting rooms. The upper floors will offer modern office spaces for businesses, while the fourth floor is being designed as a premium co-working environment accommodating up to 160 people, complete with meeting rooms, quiet pods, a lounge, and a coffee pantry. The basement will provide essential parking facilities.

The project, valued at approximately USD 2 million, also includes full interior furnishing, smart infrastructure, ICT and fire safety systems, Smart Boards, and energy-efficient cooling mechanisms, all aimed at ensuring functionality, comfort, and safety.

A key aspect of the project is its local focus. Design responsibilities were awarded to Thimphu-based firms RADArchitects and Gandhara Designs, while Phuensum Builders is handling the construction. The project was awarded through a competitive process, following a design-build model that prioritizes Bhutanese talent and firms.

Expected to be completed by the end of this year, the building will also house the first official office of the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority, symbolizing a physical and philosophical anchor for the city’s development journey.

As the first of many urban upgrades planned for Gelephu’s old town area—including improvements to streets and public spaces—the building’s transformation signals a broader wave of innovation and regeneration. The Gelephu Mindfulness City is poised to become a beacon of intentional living, sustainable development, and cultural preservation.

With shovels now in the ground, the groundwork for a new Gelephu is well underway.
