Gelephu Residents Receive Compensation After Relocation for International Airport Project

Residents of Gelephu affected by the development of the Gelephu International Airport have been compensated for the relocation of their properties, marking a significant step in one of Bhutan’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

The compensation package, widely described by locals as fair and generous, covered a broad range of assets—including buildings, trees, crops, and even livestock. The valuation process followed government-established guidelines, specifically the Bhutan Schedule of Rates and the Land Compensation Rates, ensuring standardized and equitable payouts.

Funds were disbursed only after residents opened Digital Kidu Bank accounts, a move that streamlined the payment process and enhanced financial transparency. In several cases, the compensation received exceeded the cost of the original properties, allowing some families to construct improved, modern homes in their new locations.

In an effort to support those displaced, the relocation process included advance payments to both property owners and tenants. These payments covered key transitional costs such as rent, subsistence allowances, and transportation. Additionally, residents were permitted to take any reusable materials from their old homes—even though the value of those materials had already been included in their compensation.

To address any disputes or oversight during the compensation process, a dedicated grievance redressal unit was established. The unit worked closely with the community to ensure that all items were accurately accounted for and concerns were resolved in a timely manner.

The Gelephu International Airport is expected to play a pivotal role in Bhutan’s regional connectivity and economic growth. As the project advances, the compensation and relocation process in Gelephu is being viewed as a model of transparent and humane resettlement practice.
