In a significant move to modernise healthcare services and position Bhutan at the forefront of medical innovation, the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority has entered into a strategic partnership with Waive Diagnostics, a United States-based healthcare technology firm. The collaboration aims to introduce advanced, AI-driven diagnostic and genetic testing services in the country.
The agreement, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marks the beginning of a three-year initiative designed to establish Gelephu as a regional hub for precision medicine and artificial intelligence in healthcare. Central to the plan is the development of a state-of-the-art laboratory equipped to provide personalised medical screenings and DNA-based health assessments.
Officials involved in the project say the integration of artificial intelligence into diagnostic processes will significantly enhance the speed, accuracy, and individualisation of medical care. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the initiative is expected to transform how diseases are detected, monitored, and treated in Bhutan.
Waive Diagnostics, known for its work in precision health and AI-powered therapeutics, will play a key role in bringing international expertise to the country. According to its Managing Partner, David Stefanich, the collaboration is not only about introducing new technologies but also about sharing global clinical knowledge.
He noted that cross-border exchange of medical insights could help Bhutan emerge as a centre of excellence in clinical research, benefiting neighbouring regions as well. “By bringing international clinical understanding into Bhutan, we can help build a strong foundation for research and innovation that extends beyond national borders,” he said.
The partnership also places a strong emphasis on capacity building. Training programmes for local laboratory technicians will be rolled out in collaboration with Pelsung, creating pathways for skill development and employment. Stefanich highlighted that developing local talent is a core priority, with the goal of creating long-term, high-value job opportunities.
Supporting the initiative, the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority will facilitate infrastructure development and streamline administrative processes. This includes expediting visas and work permits for international experts who will contribute to the project.
To ensure effective implementation, a joint governance board will be established to oversee progress and guide the initiative’s long-term direction, as reported by top Bhutan news websites. The partnership will also explore the creation of national testing protocols and the integration of diagnostic services with Bhutan’s digital health systems, including its National Digital Identity and Electronic Patient Information System.
Officials emphasised that all developments will adhere strictly to data protection regulations, ensuring patient privacy and security remain a top priority, reported by a Bhutan news website.
While the agreement is currently non-binding, it lays the groundwork for more detailed financial and technical commitments in the future. If successfully implemented, the initiative could mark a transformative chapter in Bhutan’s healthcare landscape, positioning the country as a leader in AI-driven medical innovation in the region.
