Thousands of volunteers from across the country gathered in Gelephu last week for the fifth round of voluntary service supporting the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), marking one of the largest community-driven efforts linked to the ambitious project to date. The five-day initiative, held from February 21 to 25, drew more than 16,000 participants and coincided with the 46th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King.
Members of the Royal Family joined citizens on the ground, working side by side with volunteers in activities ranging from land preparation to environmental conservation. Organisers described the collaboration as a reflection of shared responsibility toward the long-term vision of the GMC.
During the programme, volunteers focused on enhancing natural habitats, planting trees, and preparing land for future development. According to officials, work was carried out across nearly 578 acres, transforming large tracts of land through coordinated teamwork and community spirit. Many participants said the experience combined physical labour with a sense of mindfulness and service, values closely associated with the city’s guiding philosophy.
A significant spiritual milestone was also reached with the consecration of the Ugyen Norlha Choeten, drawing monks, devotees, and visitors to witness the ceremony. In addition, His Majesty announced plans for the construction of 108 stupas, a development that participants believe will add deeper cultural and spiritual significance to the emerging city.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers ensured that thousands of workers were cared for throughout the event. Kitchens operated around the clock, preparing meals and refreshments to sustain participants during long days of service. Organisers noted that the logistics effort was as demanding as the fieldwork itself, requiring careful coordination and unwavering commitment.
As the sun set each evening, the atmosphere shifted from labour to celebration. On February 21, volunteers gathered along the Mao riverside to honour His Majesty’s birthday with music, performances, and moments of reflection. The celebrations offered participants an opportunity to connect beyond their tasks, strengthening the sense of unity that defined the week.
With each round of voluntary service, the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative continues to gain momentum, drawing widespread public participation and reinforcing a vision that blends sustainable development, spirituality, and community engagement. Organisers say the latest event not only advanced physical progress on the ground but also strengthened the collective spirit that underpins the project’s future.
