Her Majesty Champions Justice: Focus on Women’s Rights & Protection

Bhutan marked International Women’s Day 2026 with a strong call for women’s rights, justice, and decisive action, as the nation hosted a series of advocacy programs and community-focused events under the theme of advancing gender equality.

The national commemoration was led by Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the Queen Mother of Bhutan and a longstanding advocate for women’s welfare. Her Majesty spearheaded high-level engagements that brought together government agencies, civil society organizations, and local communities to address persistent challenges facing women and girls.

Central to the observance were discussions on key issues, including women’s rights, improved access to justice, enhanced protection services, and sexual and reproductive health concerns. These conversations underscored the need for sustained, multi-sectoral efforts to dismantle barriers and promote equity.

A major highlight was the launch of two important resources: the fourth edition of the Multi-Sectoral Task Force–Community Based Support System (MSTF-CBSS) National Guideline, developed by the Ministry of Health, and a dedicated training guidebook on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Sexual Harassment (PSEASH). These tools aim to strengthen coordinated responses across sectors and equip stakeholders with practical guidance to support survivors and prevent violence.

In a symbolic gesture coinciding with the day, Her Majesty inaugurated a new RENEW Community Service Centre in Haa Dzongkhag. Also known as a Women and Girls Safe Space, the facility—Bhutan’s 15th of its kind—will provide confidential, professional support to survivors of violence while serving as a community hub for awareness and empowerment. The centers, operated by RENEW (Respect, Educate, Nurture, and Empower Women) in partnership with organizations such as UNICEF, have already reached over 100,000 people since their expansion in recent years.

During her interactions, Her Majesty addressed teacher trainees and community members, emphasizing the transformative power of education in fostering gender equality. She urged greater collaboration among all segments of society to tackle social issues and build a more inclusive future.

The events reinforced Bhutan’s commitment to collective action and coordinated responses in pursuit of gender equality. As one of the key messages from the day, officials and advocates stressed that true progress requires ongoing dedication from government, civil society, and communities alike to ensure rights, justice, and protection for all women and girls.

Bhutan’s observance aligned with the global International Women’s Day 2026 theme of “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” reflecting the country’s dedication to
