His Majesty Leads National Effort to Transform Gelephu’s Public Spaces

In an extraordinary display of unity and civic spirit, His Majesty the King of Bhutan joined 7,050 volunteers in a large-scale zhabtog initiative to develop public parks and open spaces across the emerging Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).

The week-long volunteer program, held from September 4 to 8, 2025, brought together participants from across the country, including residents of Gelephu, Gyalsups, Desuups, and enthusiastic volunteers from neighboring districts such as Tsirang, Dagana, Pemathang, Phuentsholing, Trong, Mendrelgang, and Nganglam.

The transformation of GMC’s public spaces was a collective effort involving government agencies, Members of Parliament, the Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) group and its subsidiaries, the Bhutan Red Cross Society, and the Judiciary. Together, they worked on enhancing parks, walkways, and community areas, aiming to create inviting spaces for both residents and visitors.

This initiative follows the earlier success of the GMC International Airport land development, which was also accomplished through a similar volunteer-driven approach. Speaking to the gathered participants, His Majesty expressed deep appreciation for their dedication, describing GMC as a “legacy project for future generations” and underscoring its potential to serve as a model of mindful, sustainable urban living.

As Gelephu moves closer to realizing its vision as Bhutan’s hub for mindful living and community engagement, this volunteer campaign stands as a testament to the nation’s enduring commitment to unity, service, and the stewardship of shared spaces.
