His Majesty Receives Top Honor from Japanese Tech University

In a ceremony steeped in academic tradition and international camaraderie, the Chiba Institute of Technology bestowed an Honorary Doctorate upon His Majesty the King of Bhutan. The university recognized His Majesty’s pivotal role in steering Bhutan’s peaceful shift to democracy, promoting the nation’s Gross National Happiness philosophy, and pioneering forward-thinking projects such as Gyalsung and the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).

Presiding over the event, Chancellor Takashi Yamada lauded His Majesty’s “ethical courage, systems-level insight, and unwavering commitment to global well-being,” qualities the institution seeks to instill in its students. “We are privileged to extend the highest accolade our university offers to a leader whose vision transcends borders,” Yamada remarked as the doctoral hood was placed in His Majesty’s honor.

His Majesty visited Chiba as part of a broader diplomatic and developmental tour of Japan, during which he engaged with key partners involved in the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative. This ambitious urban planning endeavor aims to integrate principles of mindfulness into infrastructure, public services, and community life, fostering mental wellness alongside economic growth.

Founded on the concept of Gyalsung—meaning “people’s initiative”—Bhutan’s national development framework encourages grassroots participation in governance and resource management. Under His Majesty’s guidance, these policies have garnered international attention, illustrating how holistic well-being can be woven into the fabric of national progress.

The ceremony also celebrated two other global figures who have reshaped their respective fields. Laurene Powell Jobs, renowned business leader and philanthropist, received an Honorary Doctorate in acknowledgment of her work through Emerson Collective to drive social change. Likewise, Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn co-founder and bestselling author, was recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit and efforts to connect professionals worldwide.

With the addition of these three luminaries, Chiba Institute of Technology affirms its dedication to honoring individuals whose contributions resonate on both local and international stages. As the university community applauded, His Majesty delivered brief remarks, expressing gratitude and emphasizing the importance of education in building resilient, compassionate societies.

The conferment underlines growing ties between Japan and Bhutan, and spotlights how academic institutions can bridge cultures by celebrating leaders who champion innovation, happiness, and shared human values.
