Nubee Om Nyamlay Detshen Expands Operations, Boosts Dairy Output in Trongsa

Trongsa’s Nubee Om Nyamlay Detshen, one of the oldest milk processing units in the district, has entered a new era of growth after moving into a spacious facility at Yidzhin Throm shed in March. The relocation marks the end of years of struggling in cramped quarters, where limited space hindered both production and hygiene standards.

Now operating from the ground floor of the newly developed shed, the cooperative is producing a wider range of high-quality dairy products, including yoghurt and paneer, alongside its traditional cheese, butter, and curd. With improved hygiene measures and more efficient workflows, the unit has strengthened its role as a key supplier in the local dairy sector, maintaining steady production to meet growing demand.

Established in 2011 with just 20 members, Nubee Om Nyamlay Detshen has grown to over 70 active members from Nubi Gewog. The cooperative collects milk from members every two days, sourcing nearly 1,400 litres per collection. The supply comes from over 400 milking cows in the gewog, enabling consistent output and product diversification.

Local members say the cooperative has transformed their livelihoods. “I have two milking cows producing about 10 litres daily, and by supplying to the group, I earn around Nu 14,000 a month,” said Dechen Wangmo, the group’s chairperson. Others note the convenience of the system, where members leave milk in roadside shelters for collection, eliminating the need to transport or market their products individually.

The cooperative has also become a financial pillar for its members, saving Nu 800,000 to date and offering loans when needed. Monthly earnings exceed Nu 1.1 million from dairy sales, with over Nu 1 million distributed to members.

District livestock officials see even greater potential ahead. “We can produce high-quality products that compete with those from outside the country,” said Jigme Chophel, Chief District Livestock Officer. “Beyond butter and cheese, we plan to diversify into yoghurt, ghee, and more to capture larger markets.”

With better facilities, stronger earnings, and a clear expansion strategy, Nubee Om Nyamlay Detshen is setting a new standard for community-led dairy farming in Trongsa—turning a once modest operation into a thriving rural enterprise.
