The historic valley of Punakha is set to host a vibrant celebration of Bhutanese cinema as the Annual Film Festival returns tomorrow, coinciding with the birthday celebrations of His Majesty The King. Organisers confirmed that all preparations have been finalised, with a full-scale rehearsal conducted earlier this evening.
The festival will unfold at the playground of Punakha Higher Secondary School, where audiences will gather to watch filmmakers and performers come together in a unique cultural showcase. This year’s edition promises a distinctive atmosphere, with spectators enjoying the programme against the iconic backdrop of Punakha Dzong — a setting expected to elevate the experience for both guests and participants.
A total of 24 films, including three short features, will compete across 21 award categories. The lineup reflects the diversity of Bhutan’s growing film industry, ranging from suspenseful horror productions to major box-office dramas that have gained national popularity. Alongside screenings and awards, audiences can look forward to live performances by actors, actresses, and members of the local film community.
Although the festival has been celebrated for more than two decades across the country, this is only the second time Punakha has served as host. Local authorities and organisers have spent days preparing the venue, aiming to create an event that not only entertains but also highlights the region’s cultural heritage.
Industry leaders say the festival plays a vital role in encouraging filmmakers to create new content and fostering healthy competition among artists. Beyond entertainment, the event is seen as a platform that promotes cultural preservation, empowers young creatives, strengthens Bhutan’s film sector, and opens doors for international exchange while contributing to the national economy.
The Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority is organising the festival in partnership with the Bhutan Broadcasting Service, with additional support from the Punakha District Administration. Funding for the event has been provided through the Economic Stimulus Plan, reflecting ongoing efforts to boost the country’s creative industries.
