Punakha is on track to soon welcome a dedicated craft market, a move expected to give a significant boost to the district’s handicraft industry while enhancing its appeal as a cultural tourism destination. Construction of the market is progressing steadily, with about 35 percent of the work already completed.
Located below Khuruthang town near Kaja Throm, the new market is being developed using predominantly earth-rammed walls and wooden structures, reflecting traditional building techniques and complementing the district’s cultural landscape. The project, which began in the middle of last year, is being implemented by the Punakha District Administration and is scheduled for completion toward the end of this year.
Once operational, the market will feature 27 stalls, providing a dedicated and organised space for artisans to sell locally produced handicrafts. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on imported craft items by promoting authentic, locally made products to both tourists and domestic buyers.
District officials see the market as a strategic investment, particularly given Punakha’s status as one of the country’s key tourist destinations. Despite the steady flow of visitors, access to local handicrafts has remained limited due to the absence of a central marketplace. The new facility is expected to address this gap, allowing visitors to easily explore and purchase indigenous craft items in one location.
Beyond its economic benefits, the craft market is also expected to play an important role in preserving traditional skills, designs, and craft products that form an integral part of the district’s cultural heritage. By creating a reliable platform for artisans, the project is anticipated to encourage younger generations to continue practicing traditional crafts.
The construction cost of the market is estimated to range between Nu 30 million and Nu 50 million. With its completion, Punakha is expected to further strengthen its position as a premier destination for indigenous handicrafts, blending cultural preservation with sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
