Relay Marathon Unites Civil Servants in Fitness and Team Spirit

Civil servants across the country turned out in large numbers on Sunday to celebrate Civil Service Wellness Day with a nationwide marathon aimed at promoting fitness, teamwork and overall well-being.

The event, held simultaneously in all districts, saw enthusiastic participation from government officials at various levels. In Thimphu, more than 560 civil servants, including the Prime Minister, took part in a relay marathon organised for the first time as part of the wellness initiative.

A total of 112 teams competed in the relay race, each comprising five members with a mandatory inclusion of at least two women. The race began at Changlimithang Stadium and covered the full marathon distance of 42.2 kilometres, divided into segments to encourage broader participation.

Unlike traditional marathons, the relay format allowed participants to share the distance, fostering collaboration and team spirit. The first and third runners each covered 10 kilometres between Changlimithang and Jungshina, while the second and fourth runners completed 5-kilometre stretches to the Zilukha roundabout. The final runner took on the longest leg of 12.2 kilometres, passing through Lower Taba and Zhichenkhar before finishing at the stadium.

The Royal Civil Service Commission team emerged victorious, completing the race in 3 hours, 53 minutes and 5 seconds. The National Statistics Bureau and the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital teams secured second and third places respectively.

Participants highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening both physical and mental health. Many noted that the relay format made the marathon more inclusive while reinforcing teamwork and coordination.

Individual excellence was also recognised, with medals and certificates awarded across the 12.2-kilometre, 10-kilometre and 5-kilometre categories. All finishers received certificates.

The day’s celebrations extended beyond the race, featuring wellness activities such as meditation sessions, Zumba, lucky draws and musical performances, creating a festive and engaging atmosphere for all involved.
