In a significant step toward combating gender-based violence and uplifting vulnerable individuals, RENEW (Respect, Educate, Nurture, and Empower Women) has inaugurated a new community centre in Pema Gatshel. The addition brings the organisation’s nationwide network to 14 centres, reinforcing its mission to build safe and inclusive communities across Bhutan.
According to RENEW’s latest Annual Report, the organisation’s ten existing centres managed nearly 1,300 cases in the past year alone. These figures underscore the growing need for accessible support services, particularly in regions where survivors face challenges in reaching help.
A New Lifeline in Pema Gatshel
Until recently, residents of Pema Gatshel had to travel long distances or rely on the police to access assistance, often at great emotional and physical cost. Now, with the opening of a local RENEW community centre, survivors of abuse and violence can access vital services within their own district.
Situated in the renovated former Dzongdag’s residence at Tshangtseri, the centre was launched with backing from UNICEF. It provides a much-needed sanctuary for those experiencing trauma or insecurity.
Comprehensive Support Services
“We will be providing counselling, legal aid, and community awareness programs,” said Ugyen Lhundup, the centre’s manager. “We also have a safe home for those who don’t feel secure in their own homes.”
In addition to emergency support, the centre plans to introduce skill development programs, equipping individuals with tools for long-term independence and empowerment.
A Network of Hope and Resilience
Since 2022, RENEW has been establishing community centres across Bhutan, marking a new chapter in the collective fight against domestic and gender-based violence. These centres offer a range of services, including case management, legal guidance, emergency shelter, and referrals for additional assistance.
For many, they have become symbols of resilience—spaces where healing begins, voices are heard, and hope is restored. With its expanding presence, RENEW continues to pave pathways to safety, dignity, and justice for those who need it most.
