Semthuen Tshokpa Sponsors Chorten for GMC

Momentum continues to build behind the construction of 108 Jangchub Chortens at Gelephu Mindfulness City, with more than two-thirds of the planned structures already backed by sponsors from Bhutan and abroad.

According to project officials, over 70 of the 108 chortens have secured sponsorship commitments. Each chorten requires a contribution of approximately USD 200,000, or around Nu 20 million, reflecting the scale of support being mobilised for the landmark spiritual undertaking.

Among the latest contributors is Semthuen Tshokpa, a group comprising 108 distinguished Bhutanese, including former ministers, senior civil servants, and respected public figures. Led by former Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup, the group recently pledged Nu 23.3 million toward the initiative.

Of the amount contributed, Nu 20 million has been allocated to sponsor the construction of Jangchub Chorten No. 5, while the remaining Nu 3.3 million will assist with logistical and organisational requirements associated with the major event scheduled for 1 November.

Members of Semthuen Tshokpa described their contribution as a gesture of appreciation to the nation that has shaped their lives and careers, as well as a continuation of their commitment to national service.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Dasho Rinzin Gyaltshen said the project presents a rare and meaningful opportunity for Bhutanese citizens to participate in a vision that will have lasting benefits for the country.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is His Majesty The King’s vision, and it is something that will benefit everyone. People from other countries are already contributing to this sacred undertaking, making it even more important for Bhutanese, particularly senior citizens, to take part. Significant preparation is required before construction begins, so contributing early is essential,” he said.

Support for the project has come from a broad cross-section of society. Religious institutions, private businesses, foundations, and individual benefactors from Bhutan and overseas have all joined the effort. Contributions are also being mobilised through Bhutanese communities living abroad, with several diaspora organisations launching fundraising initiatives in support of the project.

To facilitate donations, authorised accounts have been established through DK Bank and the Bank of Bhutan. Supporters can also contribute through an online crowdfunding platform operated by the Royal Securities Exchange of Bhutan.

The initiative, envisioned by His Majesty The King, will see 108 Jangchub Chortens erected at Gelephu Mindfulness City on 1 November, forming a significant spiritual and cultural landmark within the emerging city.
