Respected Editor,
As a pet owner, I was genuinely happy, and honestly a bit surprised, to learn about the advanced veterinary services now available at the National Veterinary Hospital in Motithang. For years, many of us believed that serious medical conditions in pets either meant costly treatment abroad or, sadly, accepting loss as inevitable. It turns out that is no longer the case.
The fact that our national hospital is now performing complex procedures like eye surgeries, orthopaedic operations, gastrotomy, and even chemotherapy is truly encouraging. These are not minor treatments; they are life-changing interventions that can mean the difference between losing a beloved pet and giving it a healthy second chance. The hospital has reportedly carried out around 100 surgeries over the past year alone, with orthopaedic and eye surgeries being the most common. That is no small achievement.
What is concerning, however, is that many pet owners are still unaware that these services exist, even though they were introduced more than a year ago. This lack of awareness can lead to unnecessary suffering and, in some cases, avoidable loss of pets. That is truly heartbreaking.
Credit must also go to the hospital staff, who have been working day and night on a shift basis since March, with a limited team of 38 staff and just five doctors, two of whom are specialised. Their dedication deserves recognition and stronger public support.
I hope that through your esteemed platform, this information reaches more pet owners. Our animals depend on us to make informed decisions, and now we finally have advanced care available right here at home.
Sincerely,
A concerned pet owner
