The Bhutan Live
Dear Editor,
Bhutan’s rising youth unemployment is no longer a “ticking time bomb”—it is a full-blown crisis. Beneath the surface of growing remittance figures and glowing stories of Bhutanese thriving abroad lies an uncomfortable truth: our young people are leaving the country not merely for adventure or education, but because they see no future here. This exodus of talent and ambition should trouble every planner, every politician, and every citizen who cares about Bhutan’s future.
We must move beyond short-term economic fixes and tackle the deeper crisis of will. Our youth need meaningful opportunities that align with their skills, passions, and our national values—whether through entrepreneurship, vocational training, or innovative public-private partnerships. Only by restoring hope in the possibility of a fulfilling life here can we turn this crisis into a renaissance of Bhutanese ingenuity.
Sincerely,
Pema Dorji
