Tariffs Hit Hard: China Plunges as Vietnam, Mexico, and India Rise – Politico Report

The United States significantly reduced its reliance on Chinese imports in 2025, with China’s share of the overall U.S. import market dropping to 9%, down from 13.4% in 2024, according to the Commerce Department’s December trade report.

This shift, driven largely by historic tariffs imposed under President Donald Trump—some reaching triple-digit levels—has reshaped global trade patterns. U.S. imports from China fell to $308 billion in 2025, the lowest since 2009 and a more than 42% decline from the record high of $539 billion in 2018.

“Basically, what’s happening is as China is falling across the board, many Asian countries are increasing their share of U.S. imports,” Paroma Soni, a trade analyst, quoted in the Politico report. She highlighted Vietnam, Taiwan, Mexico, and India as key beneficiaries of this diversification.

The decline was particularly stark in sectors like electronics, where imports plunged amid the tariff pressures. While some categories, such as electric storage batteries, still show higher dependence on China (around 50% in certain areas), most other sectors have seen substantial reductions in reliance on Chinese suppliers.

The changes stem from Trump’s staggered and often modified tariff regime throughout 2025, which targeted Chinese goods aggressively as part of broader efforts to address trade imbalances and supply chain vulnerabilities. Although the overall U.S. goods trade deficit remained near record highs, the sharp drop in Chinese imports was offset by increases from other trading partners, including Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Ireland, Mexico, India, Indonesia, and France.

This trend marks a notable reversal from China’s peak influence, when its share of the U.S. import market reached 21.6% in 2017. The developments underscore ongoing U.S. policy moves to “de-risk” from China, with implications for global manufacturing, supply chains, and economic competition in the years ahead.
