All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Games allow children to develop their creativity, imagination and physical and mental strength. In Dewathang of Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde, children often run to the streets to play due to the lack of a proper playground.
As soon as school gets over, most of the children in Dewathang come out onto the roads to play. This has left the parents worried. They are calling for the relevant agencies to construct a proper Children’s Park.
Some parents say their children remain engaged in television and smartphones due to the lack of a playground.
“Children go straight to the road to play. We get worried since they could get hit by a car,” said Jampel, a resident of Dewathang town.
“We are afraid that my children will get hurt while playing along the road. Having a children’s park would be safer,” said another parent Sonam Tobgay.
“Children could get run over since most of them play along the roads. We need a proper place for children to play,” said Choten.
Meanwhile, the Thromde administration says they have already made plans to construct a children’s park in Dewathang town. It is expected to be ready by June of next year.
The park will have a playground with swings, slides and other games as well as a basketball court for older children. The Thromde has allocated about Nu 6 M to construct the park.
Dewathang, which is located on the northern side of the Thromde, has a population of around 5,000 people including more than 1,000 children.
