In a groundbreaking move, the enchanting Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary (PWS), nestled within 269 sq km of pristine natural beauty, is set to welcome tourists as part of the ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City project masterplan. The much-anticipated soft opening, initially scheduled for December 17, 2023, has been temporarily halted to align seamlessly with the larger project’s vision.
The delay is attributed to the meticulous realignment of approximately 5 km of the safari road trail, ensuring a smooth and safe experience for visitors. Additionally, efforts are underway to clear the surrounding bushes, enhancing accessibility and preserving the sanctuary’s natural charm.
While enthusiasts eagerly await the grand unveiling, the sanctuary has not idled away its time. A comprehensive eco-tourism plan, complete with essential facilities such as toilets and amenities, has been crafted to offer a comfortable and memorable experience for visitors. The strategic business plan, backed by Bhutan for Life, encompasses a range of exciting activities, including glamping, camping, safari jeep rides, bird watching, and zip-lining.
Originally designed to operate from October to March, the park’s schedule includes a thoughtful closure of 3 to 4 months during the rainy season to account for rising rivers and streams. This careful planning aims to ensure the safety of both tourists and the sanctuary’s diverse ecosystem.
Although Phibsoo is the smallest among Bhutan’s ten national parks, it boasts an astonishingly high level of biodiversity, making it a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Bhutan, PWS stands out due to two distinctive features – the presence of the elusive Spotted Deer and the existence of natural Sal forests, which are found nowhere else in the country. In addition to these unique traits, the sanctuary shelters other important tropical species, including elephants, gaurs, and golden langurs.
As the sanctuary awaits its grand entry into the world of tourism, it promises not only an opportunity for adventure and relaxation but also a chance to witness and preserve the extraordinary biodiversity that makes Phibsoo truly one-of-a-kind. The upcoming soft opening, now intricately woven into the fabric of the Gelephu Mindfulness City project, anticipates leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who venture into its lush embrace.
