Tourism Takes Flight with New Heli Bhutan Private Chopper Service

In a significant boost to Bhutan’s aviation and tourism industries, Heli Bhutan, the country’s first private helicopter service, is poised to revolutionize travel and exploration within the Himalayan kingdom. As Drukair, Bhutan’s sole state-owned airline, faces increasing passenger demand, Heli Bhutan steps in to offer an upscale alternative, enhancing the nation’s appeal to high-end travelers.

Scheduled to commence operations in early 2025, Heli Bhutan will introduce a fleet of premium helicopter services designed to cater to a variety of needs, including scenic tours, passenger transport, aerial work, and rescue missions. The company’s inaugural Airbus H-125 helicopter, renowned for its versatility and ability to carry up to six passengers, is expected to arrive in Bhutan by January.

The launch of Heli Bhutan is anticipated with great excitement, especially as it promises to offer an exclusive experience that showcases Bhutan’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The company’s website, now live, provides detailed insights into its services and allows for pre-bookings starting in October. In preparation for its operations, Heli Bhutan has enlisted two highly experienced European pilots.

CEO Chencho Dorji, who was inspired to establish Heli Bhutan following a recommendation from a visiting foreign friend, is enthusiastic about the company’s role in Bhutan’s tourism sector. “Our aim is to complement His Majesty The King’s vision for Gelephu Mindfulness City by improving connectivity, drawing talent, and positioning Bhutan as a premier destination for cultural, adventure, and spiritual tourism,” Dorji stated.

Heli Bhutan’s official launch is set to coincide with the birth anniversary of His Majesty The King on February 21, 2025. This strategic timing underscores the company’s commitment to contributing to Bhutan’s tourism and aviation sectors. With a foreign direct investment model—70% from U.S. and Canadian investors—the venture reflects Bhutan’s growing appeal as a destination for international investment.

As Heli Bhutan navigates the final stages of securing its Air Operator Certificate from the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority, the details of its service rates remain to be determined. However, the company’s emphasis on safety and high-quality service promises to set a new standard for travel in Bhutan.

With this innovative development, Heli Bhutan is set to offer a new dimension to exploring the Himalayas, ensuring that visitors experience the kingdom’s majestic beauty from a unique and elevated perspective.
