A centuries-old display of strength and endurance found an unlikely new contender this year as an American student stepped into the arena of the Nyagoe strongman competition, captivating both the local crowd and online audiences around the world.
Brandon Jackson Uveges, currently studying at Sherubtse College, became the first international participant to take part in the renowned event, which is deeply rooted in Bhutanese tradition. The competition, known for testing physical power and grit, challenges participants with demanding tasks such as hauling massive logs, lifting heavy sandbags, and dragging oversized tires across rugged terrain.
Against a field of seasoned local competitors, Jackson delivered an impressive performance, finishing in third place overall. While competition rules meant he was not eligible for the main prizes reserved for Bhutanese participants, organizers acknowledged his remarkable effort with a special consolation award.
Spectators cheered as Jackson powered through each stage, his determination and sportsmanship earning widespread praise. Clips and photos of his participation quickly spread across social media, where users applauded not only his physical strength but also his genuine respect for Bhutanese culture and traditions.
Speaking after the event, Jackson expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and confirmed his intention to return for future competitions. He also encouraged Bhutanese youth to continue embracing and preserving Nyagoe, describing it as a powerful symbol of cultural identity and community pride.
The excitement surrounding the event is far from over, as the grand final of the Nyagoe competition is scheduled to take place on December 17, coinciding with Bhutan’s National Day celebrations — a fitting stage for a tradition that blends heritage, strength, and national spirit.
