Bhutan marked a momentous occasion on February 21, 2026, as His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck celebrated his 46th birthday alongside more than 12,000 volunteers at the Gelephu Mindfulness City. The day was distinguished not only by celebration but by a deeply symbolic ceremony that underscored Bhutan’s spiritual heritage.
In a rare gathering, three generations of Bhutanese royalty — His Majesty the King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and the young Gyalsey — joined His Holiness the Je Khenpo and members of the Royal Family to break ground for the Gelephu Chorten. The structure, planned to rise 80 metres, will stand as a significant Buddhist landmark at the foothills where the Himalayas meet the Indo-Gangetic plains.
Inspired by the historic Boudhanath Stupa, also known as Jarung Khashor, the Gelephu Chorten draws from a profound spiritual lineage. According to Buddhist tradition, the original chorten’s origins trace back to a humble woman whose plea to build a sacred monument moved a king to grant land with the spontaneous command, “let it be done.” That act of compassion and faith would echo across centuries.
The story is intertwined with revered figures such as Padmasambhava, who played a pivotal role in spreading Buddhism across the Himalayas, and Trisong Detsen, who helped establish Buddhism in Tibet. Their legacy remains central to Vajrayana Buddhism and Bhutan’s identity.
The new chorten continues this historical thread, linking ancient teachings to modern Bhutan. Commissioned in 2023 by the King, it reflects a vision that blends spiritual continuity with national development.
As Bhutan looks to the future, the Gelephu Chorten stands not just as an architectural achievement, but as a testament to enduring faith, compassion, and the timeless aspirations of the Buddhist world.
